Limelight is a feature documentary directed by Eddie Beyrouthy (Beyond the Wasteland) that tells the untold story of The Salvation Army’s Limelight Department, founded in Australia 1891, and through revolutionary magic lantern shows, film projection, music and performance, became one of the world’s first film studios, paving the way for the birth of the Australian film industry until it was forced to close its doors in 1910, ending a never-to-be-repeated chapter in The Salvation Army history.
Limelight gives voice to the stories of the first Australian pioneers of the moving image, and restores a cherished part of The Salvation Army’s rich history through unseen original footage and archives, transformed using modern production techniques, with the addition of sound design and original music.
Releasing second quarter 2025 through Heritage Films International.
Shot in Australia, USA, Italy, France, and Japan, Beyond the Wasteland follows the fans from around the world who go to extraordinary lengths in the name of Mad Max as they celebrate 40 years of this global cult phenomenon. Transporting us into the world of Mad Max, we explore the eccentric world of the fans, their costumes, and their machines as these oddball fans find their place amongst the Mad Max community. From the world’s largest Mad Max gathering in the USA, Wasteland Weekend to Japan’s Mad Max conventions, and Australia’s own The Search for Max event, Beyond the Wasteland not only celebrates life but the ability to change oneself through passion. The documentary also follows original cast member, Bertrand Cadart as he continues his fight against stage IV leukaemia and travels from his home on the Sunshine Coast to the “Wasteland,” the desert location of Mad Max 2 in Silverton, for the last time. This is a truly inspiring documentary.
